GREEN PROGRAM

Green chemistry (aka sustainable chemistry) is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. It applies across the life-cycle, including the design, manufacture, handling, storage, transportation, use and disposal of a chemical product and may involve reduction of wastes, reduction of toxic components, and improved efficiencies.

If you haven't looked at green chemistry lately, we urge you to do so. This is not the inefficient, ineffective, questionable movement of the 1980's. Back then you had to pay a premium price and give up substantial performance in order to call yourself safety and environmentally conscious. A lot has changed over the past 20 years. Today, green products frequently outperform conventional products at the same price point. So take a look at green chemistry. It's the right thing to do, and you won't pay more in price or performance.

Our commitment to protecting human health and the environment began over 10 years ago, but has recently gained momentum with the EPA's Green Chemistry Program. Our all-organic products are designed to rapidly biodegrade to innocuous substances in wastewater treatment systems. We regularly evaluate our manufacturing and distribution processes; from procurement of feedstocks, to delivery of final products to the end user, to ensure that our operations take every opportunity to reduce hazardous substances and minimize waste according to the Sustainable (Green) Chemistry Hierarchy:

Most Favorable:

Least Favorable:
Prevent Byproducts & Waste
Source Reduction (minimization)
Reuse
Recycle
Rebuy (purchase products that reduce your environmental profile)
Energy Recovery
Treat Chemicals to Render Them Less Hazardous
Dispose of Chemicals Properly
Chemical processes, products, and uses should be designed to the highest level of this hierarchy and be cost competitive in the marketplace. Our hope is that if we do our part, it will encourage our customers to do their part. Because the greatest protection to human health and the environment that our products can offer is not in how they are manufactured, handled, stored, and transported, but in how they are used and disposed of. We were recently inspired by a new customer application that serves as a great example. See the story "Perfect Storm" under News.

Following are a few examples of some benefits derived from Wholesale Chemical's Green Program:

Wholesale Chemical Doing Their Part
  • Our manufacturing processes use real-time process control and, whenever possible, catalysts instead of stoichiometric reagents to maximize first intent products and minimize generation of low-value byproducts and wastes.
  • Because we formulate our products to meet your specific application needs, we provide only the chemistry you need and eliminate unnecessary ingredients. Just because an ingredient is "active" doesn't mean it is beneficial to your application. We also eliminate inactive ingredients such as thickeners, diluents, and fillers that would 1) add to the cost, and 2) increase dosages required, and 3) oftentimes reduce a product's effectiveness to the point that replacing the inactives with WATER would improve performance.
  • Our Green Program eliminates volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) by either designing products that don't require solvents, or by using non-volatile, naturally derived solvents. Today there are hundreds of naturally derived, non-volatile, high performing solvents from nondepleting feedstocks (those that can be renewed annually).
  • We are constantly testing new ingredients that can replace or upgrade our products. Our objective is to continuously improve our products by designing for improved performance, less toxicity, better degradability, and safer handling and use.
Our Customers Doing Their Part
  • Using purpose-designed chemistry improves the treatment and separation of wastewater. Treated water will be cleaner, and produced sludge will be minimized and of higher quality. Cleaner water offers more opportunities to reuse and recycle the water in your process before disposal. Minimizing sludge and improving its quality reduces waste and increases opportunities for beneficial uses.
  • Using purpose-designed chemistry improves the treatment and separation of oil phases. Cleaner oil can be sold into higher end use markets, such as chain lube blend stock (reuse or recycle) instead of asphalt burner fuel (energy recovery).
  • Cleaner oil sold into the energy recovery market provides cleaner, more efficient burning resulting in reduced equipment maintenance and reduced air pollution.
  • Using high performance products that react quickly at reduced dosages and at ambient or reduced temperatures result in reduced energy consumption. Burning less fuel reduces carbon dioxide emissions and reduces your carbon footprint.
